The most important thing for this family with two small children was plenty of storage and durable surfaces.  As the budget for the interior was quite tight.  We decided to go with Ikea for the kitchen, pantry, bar, mudroom, and bathroom millwork.  Therefore the selection of tiles, although of the smaller price points, were imperative to elevate the home to a higher standard of design.  The uneven quality of the terracotta tiles juxtaposes the clean, white, mass produced cabinetry door fronts and adds a sturdy feeling to the rooms.  For the kids’ bathroom we went with basic shapes in black and white with penny round flooring a square wall tile accentuated by the black grout and topped off with a circular mirror and sphere lamp.  The ensuite boasts a large shower with spa-like colours of warm greys giving the parents a place of calm to escape to.  For the laundry room we took the zellig tile right to the ceiling and matched them with their concrete counterpart on the floors for a look of durably and sustainability in a room meant for business.  And for some cost saving slight-of-hand, we used those same wall tiles for the backsplash and the same quartz countertop from the kitchen at the basement bar.
